About the Author

Hello hello!

I’m Dr. Conor Heffernan, a historian of sport, fitness, and physical culture. Currently a Lecturer in the School of Sport at Ulster University, I research the ways bodies, strength, and health have been shaped by culture, politics, and industry.

I’ve published widely on the history of fitness, including Indian Club Swinging and the Birth of Global Fitness (Bloomsbury, 2023), The History of Physical Culture (CommonGround, 2022) and The History of Physical Culture in Ireland (Palgrave, 2021), and I regularly contribute to public conversations on sport and health through documentaries, podcasts, and media outlets. My work has been featured by the BBC, RTÉ, Barbend, and Barbell Films.
