Once upon a time there were two skinny young men who trained in a commercial gym downtown. The gym was not overly large, nor was it especially fancy, but it had good solid equipment and lots of weight. This was probably fortunate because it was usually crowded in the evening.
The gym also had lots of benches scattered around. The benches all had soft padded tops which was also fortunate because the two young men spent most of their time sitting on them.
One winter evening, about half an hour from closing time, they were training as usual. One of the young men was lying on a flat bench with his eyes closed and his feet propped up on the wall. The other young man was stretched out on the abdominal board with his hands folded under his head for a pillow and big dark circles under both eyes.
They were talking about their training.
The first young man raised his head a little bit and said, โWhat else we gotta do?โ
โBench presses,โ said the second young man. โFour sets.โ He thought for a moment and a pained look came over his face. โAnd tricep presses and curls,โ he added.
The first young man groaned and let his head sink back on the bench. โMan,โ he said. โItโs like too much. Iโll never make it.โ
The second young man put his hand politely over his mouth to stifle a yawn. โI tell you what,โ he said. โHow about we only do one set of bench presses?โ
The first young man rolled his eyes around without moving his head and looked at him.
โKinda taper off, like.โ
โRight,โ said the second young man. โConservation of energy and all that.โ
โGood idea, Fred,โ agreed the first young man. โCapital suggestion and all that rot.โ He wriggled farther down on the bench. โYou go first.โ
โRight after you, Ralph.โ
โO.K.,โ the first young man said. โIโll take the strain. How much we using?โ
โOne seventy.โ
โOne seventy? Clarence, you jest.โ
โNo. Really.โ
โMake it one fifty.โ
โO.K.,โ said the second young man. โOne fifty.โ
They put one hundred and fifty pounds on the bar and the first young man flopped down on a bench and did eight reps with it. โMan,โ he said. โThatโs a heavy brute.โ
The second young man yawned hugely. โAinโt we doinโ ten reps anymore?โ
โNot tonight we ainโt,โ said the first young man. โIโm outa gas like.โ
The second young man rolled over on the abdominal board and closed his eyes. โMe too,โ he said. โBut, man, what a party. What timeโd you cut out?โ
โThree-thirty,โ the first young man said. โI never hit the cool whites till four.โ
โQuarter past for me,โ said the second young man. โBut what a bash.โ
โMint.โ
โWild.โ
They lay back and closed their eyes and smiled broad sleepy smiles. They were lying there with their eyes closed and their mouths open when the gym owner walked over.
The gym owner was a large man about forty with a nagging wife and a worried look.
Usually he worried about money, but tonight he was worried because his wife was threatening to leave him and he was afraid she might change her mind. He walked over slowly because his feet hurt and spoke to the young men.
โHowโs it going, fellas?โ
The first young man looked up and smiled in a friendly way. โLike mint, Dad. A real invigorating thing.โ
โYeah,โ said the second young man. He yawned deeply and crossed his legs. โReal invigorating.โ
The gym owner stood for a while and looked at them lying there and wondered what the hell he was doing in the muscle business when he could have just as easy been a plumber. โWhat say we get rolling, fellas?โ he said. โSheโs getting close to quitting time.โ
โNo rush, Dad,โ the first young man said. โWe donโt pick up the girls till eleven.โ
โYeah,โ said the second young man. โAnd, man, itโs cold out there.โ
The gym owner closed his eyes and thought about his mortgage for ten seconds before he answered. โO.K. But you donโt want to cool off too much. You oughta keep going.โ
โGood idea,โ said the first young man. โAbsolutely first rate.โ He rolled over and spoke to the second young man. โGet goin!โ
โGoing?โ the second young man said. โCharley, I just watched you bench pressing. Iโm beat.โ
The gym owner gritted his teeth and spoke to the second young man. โDid you do your bench presses yet?โ
โNot yet, Dad,โ the second young man said. He yawned and rubbed his eyes. โMatter of fact, I think Iโll maybe skip โem tonight.โ
โYeah,โ said the first young man. โLike they donโt seem to be doing nothing for us anyway.โ
โThatโs a fact,โ the second young man said. โWe ainโt gettinโ nowhere.โ
โLike weโre figuring on quitting anyway,โ agreed the first young man.
โRight,โ said the second young man. โKinda rest up, like.โ
The gym ownerโs stomach twinged like it always did when people talked about quitting. He thought for a long moment about the re-built transmission in his car and the repair bill that looked like a ransom note and when he spoke his voice was soft and persuasive. โListen, fellas. Believe me, thatโd be a mistake. Youโd regret it when you got older. A little weight trainingโs the best thing in the world for fellas your age.โ
โI dunno, Dad,โ the first young man said. โSeems kinda like a waste of time lately.โ
โNo, itโs not,โ the gym owner said. โYouโre improving your strength. Youโre improving your health.โ He racked his brain. โAnd besides,โ he leaned forward and winked at the young men, โwe know how the girls go for the old muscles, eh?โ
He knew heโd made a good point and he slid on a risque grin to clinch the thing. He stood there leering in what he hoped was a worldly manner although actually he just looked like a dirty old man. โThatโs where the muscles pay off, eh?โ
โThatโs the point, Dad,โ said the first young man. He held up an arm like a stick and said, โWhereโs the muscles?โ
โYeah,โ the second young man said. โLike, whatโs with this Tarzan bit?โ
The gym owner thought desperately for a moment and then said, โListen, fellas. Youโre worried cause youโre not making progress, right?โ
โRight.โ
โO.K., then. If youโre not making progress thereโs something wrong.โ
The second young man closed his eyes again. โLike I already figured that, Dad.โ
โO.K.,โ the gym owner said. โO.K. But I know what your trouble is.โ
The first young man lay back and said, โInteresting, Dad. Lay it on me.โ
The gym owner blinked. โPardon?โ
โTell us about it, Dad,โ the second young man said. โTell us all about it.โ
โO.K.,โ the gym owner said. He sat on the end of a bench. โYour big trouble, fellas, isโฆ โhe paused three seconds for full effect and then spoke in a firm heavy voiceโฆ โyouโre not getting enough sleep.โ
The first young man sat up and looked at the gym owner out of his bloodshot eyes. โClyde,โ he said. โYouโre putting me on.โ
โNo,โ the gym owner said. โReally. You canโt expect to gain if you donโt get your proper sleep.โ He looked at the second young man. โHow much sleep did you get last night?โ
โThree hours.โ
โThree hours? Why thatโs nowhere near enough. You need a lot more hours sleep than that.โ
โI do, Dad,โ the second young man said. โLike about six more on the flip side.โ
The gym owner wasnโt sure exactly what he meant but he felt he was getting through so he continued, โGoing without sleep is the worst thing in the world for your health.โ
โYea,โ said the first young man. โLike itโs tough on a growing boy.โ
โExactly,โ said the second young man. โAbsolutely lethal.โ
โA real drag.โ
The gym owner listened to them babbling away and wondered what the law said about justifiable homicide. โYou see,โ he continued, โyour body is designed to go only so long without sleep. After that your health breaks down. You canโt expect to make gains. You canโt even expect to keep what youโve got.โ
He shifted around and continued. โWeight training is pretty concentrated stuff. It takes a lot out of you. You got to give your body a chance to recuperate.โ
He looked carefully at the two young men to see if he was getting across. They didnโt look too interested but they hadnโt fallen asleep either so he continued. โYou see, you load up on fatigue poisons during the day. These are all carried away by the blood while you sleep. The blood packs oxygen and nourishment to the tissues. It cleans them and rebuilds them. But if you donโt get rid of all the fatigue poisons you eventually run out of energy.โ
โOuta gas, like,โ said the first young man.
โRight,โ said the gym owner. โOut of gas.โ He thought for a moment and then said, โItโs kind of a double-edged thing. You donโt have the energy to train properly, so you donโt really do justice to the time you spend at it. You just canโt work hard enough to get decent results. After a while you canโt work hard at all.โ
The second young man closed his eyes and said, โMan, thatโs me. Like Iโve had it.โ
โThatโs right,โ said the gym owner. โAnd even if you did work hard you wouldnโt gain. You donโt build up during the actual workout, you build up when youโre resting after.โ
โThat may be, Dad,โ said the first young man. โOnly what about it when you ainโt resting?โ
โThen you wonโt grow,โ said the gym owner. โThatโs one of the reasons so many young fellows donโt get much out of their training. You need lots of rest and sleep. If youโre working hard with the weights you need at least nine or ten hours sleep a night.โ
He figured heโd made the point but he repeated it anyway. โIf you want to build up big, youโve simply got to get enough sleep. Youโre wasting your time if you donโt. You got to get nine or ten hours a night if you want to make it.โ
The first young man dragged himself up. โWell, Dad, in that case we ainโta gonna make it.โ
โRight,โ said the second young man. โLike we got heavy commitments.โ
The gym ownerโs stomach started twinging again. โLook, fellas. Listen to me. Quitting isnโt the answer.โ
โMaybe not, Dad, but it leaves more time.โ
โYeah,โ said the second young man. โLike this training bit cuts into the social life.โ
โListen, fellas,โ the gym owner said. โTake my word for it. This is the most important thing youโll ever do. Donโt give it up.โ He leaned forward and talked earnestly. โWhatโs more important than your strength? Whatโs more important than your health? What takes up so much of your time, anyway?โ
The first young man grinned. โGirls, Dad. Girls.โ
The gym owner blinked. โGirls? You donโt need to spend that much time with them.โ
The second young man sat up too. โMan,โ he said. โItโs no strain, you know.โ
โRight,โ said the first young man. โLike didnโt you ever chase โem, Dad?โ
The gym owner straightened up and smiled nostalgically. โMatter of fact, fellas, I did.โ
Then he thought about his wife and the smile vanished and his stomach twinged again. โTrouble is,โ he muttered, โI caught one.โ
The second young man leaned forward. โHowโs that, Dad?โ
โNever mind,โ the gym owner said. โIt doesnโt matter.โ He leaned forward again. โFellas, Iโm gonna give you some free advice. Work out a compromise on this. Date during the week if you have to, but get home early for your own good. If you gotta stay out that late, do it on the weekend so you can sleep in the next day. That way you can have your social life and still make gains. Believe me,โ he added, โweight training is still the best all-around thing youโll ever do.โ
The first young man lay back again and said, โYou may be right, Dad. I donโt think I can keep up the pace anyway.โ
โGood,โ said the gym owner. โThatโs a sensible decision. Now, Iโll tell you what to do. Go home and get a good nightโs sleep. Then lay off training for the rest of the week and rest up. You can start in again next week with a fresh approach.โ
โO.K.,โ said the second young man. โWeโll give her a whirl.โ
โFine,โ said the gym owner. โBut donโt forgetโnine or ten hours sleep every night. You wonโt gain without it.โ
The two young men got up and dressed and went home. Everyone else had already left. The gym owner walked around turning off lights and picking up towels. He put on his coat and walked to the door. โGirls,โ he said. He turned around and looked at the spot on the ceiling where the roof leaked and the plaster needed fixing and then massaging his stomach with the palm of his hand he walked out and closed the door behind him.
